Sunday

Quake: It is the anniversary of the first quake today. A great interview on the quake on Radio NZ this morning with Chris Laidlaw who spoke to Peter Hyde.

3 points he made - they couldn't refill out of date gas bottles- as they were out of date!!! No lists made of where people were sent to; water was put into areas that were out of bounds!! Madness.

He had some great ideas on how we could do it better but as he said they (the Government/Civil Defence) will probably not listen.

More: Listening to Mike Miller, (CEO of the IRB) also on Radio NZ this morning he made the comment that Rugby is the National Sport of two countries. He didn't say which ones but I assume he meant NZ and South Africa. Or maybe he meant Wales and NZ?. Who knows. He certainly doesn't as it is the National Sport of Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. Oh of course - they are not really countries in the eyes of the IRB. Pathetic as usual in their treatment of the Pacific.

I emailed him (Chris) but he didn't read it out.

Hubbard: Alan Hubbard of South Canterbury Finance has been killed in a car crash. The company went down the gurgler having been around since 1926. He was being charged with fraud but I think the complexity of the business got on top of him as old age set in. I find it hard to believe he was a fraudster as his very simple life style attested.

Libya: Down the drain and it would seem the rebels (whoever they might be) have won and Gaddafi is on the run. As usual I think we have replaced their thugs with our (for the meantime) thugs. The fall came quite quickly after what seemed to be stalemate which makes me think that there was probably some Western help on the ground.

More madness: as usual the Americans take todays prize - in particular Florida.

In Florida cohabitation of unmarried people is currently a second-degree misdemeanor, punishable by $500 or up to 60 days in jail due to a law passed in 1868. The law only applies to opposite-sex couples.

But the most incredible bit is that in the last twelve months a 104 people have been charged with breaking the law and nearly 700 in the last five years . One state lawmaker thinks the statute has outlived its purpose and wants it repealed but he can't get the Legislature to agree as the Republican majority want to keep it in place. Nutters!!.
